2Summer kimono are divided into two types: the first, known as hitoe, are kimono that do not have an inside lining. Typical rules of wear indicate that hitoe are only worn in June and September. Currently, there are more and more people arguing that the hitoe should be worn not only in June and September. The second type of summer kimono are lighter kimono, designed to make wearing a kimono in the summer heat of July and August more bearable. Both types are a specialised market within the already specialised market of kimono.

6It did in fact turn out to be the case that a custom-made kimono was better for me. I tried wearing a great deal of kimono, both custom-made and hand-me-downs that were custom-made for someone else, and the ones made to my measurements are definitely easiest to wear because the fabric falls exactly where you would expect it to go, so the ‘finished package’ is more likely to look as imagined. Many women told me that, for them as well, a bespoke kimono was easiest to wear.

7The width varies according to the manufacturer, when the bolt was made and whether it was intended for a woman or a man. Bolt length also varies.

8Wassai refers to Japanese methods of sewing, and yōsai refers to Western methods of sewing associated with Western clothes.

9Kimono bolts are often draped over the shoulder to give the customer an idea of what the fabric would look like if it was sewn up as a kimono. This helps the customer decide if the colour suits them and if they like the fabric on their own body.

10Omeshi belongs to a category of kimono in which the pattern is woven into the fabric during the weaving process.
