Type Fives tend to insulate themselves from the complexity of the world to gather and accumulate knowledge they perceive will alleviate their feeling of inner emptiness. Life, for them, often seems like too much to handle. They feel a lack of adequate personal resources to meet demands, so they will withdraw into their own private world of thoughts and concepts to escape. They resist intrusions into their personal space and need time to reengage if necessary. The protective seed coat for Type Fives is an overidentification with their divine gift of wisdom as they try to re-create an “inner knowing” by studying and synthesizing. This need to perceive and know compels them to diligently search for the keys that will unlock some truth and will give them a sense of competence and assurance. One Type Five shares this struggle:

Although I am a social person, my entire life is filtered through my head. I am constantly bouncing ideas off myself; my mind is my greatest ally and sometimes my greatest enemy. When I am with friends, I constantly try to find out information about them. If I am in a large group, I pay close attention to all the interactions and evaluate the feelings of the room and the tone of everyone in it. Then I will go home and replay all of my interactions to see if there is any useful info I need to retain. Thinking is my main mode of operation.
