“I got it,” Emery grumbled as he jerked his arm away from the man trying to lead him from the SUV and into the dense forest near where Gaius had first dropped from the sky. Since they’d all had to pile into his new vehicle, he was kind of glad he’d foregone the Southern-boy vibe and settled on the Tahoe instead of another truck. “Where are you taking us?”

“Em,” Jade said wearily, “please be quiet before you get us killed.”

The way Emery saw it, if these guy wanted them dead, they’d already be dead. Or more likely, they would have been left back at the mall. “Where is Gaius?” The only reason he’d agreed to leave with these guys in the first place was because they’d promised to lead him to his mate. “If you’ve hurt one single hair on his head…”

“Emery!”

Jerking his head up, he caught sight of his sweet little nymph standing near a tree, surrounded by several other large, rough-looking men. Charging into the clearing, he ignored everything and everyone else, going straight to Gaius and lifting the man into his arms while he took deep breaths to try and calm his pounding heart.

“Hey, sugar. Are you okay? Did they hurt you?”

“Oh, Emery,” Gaius answered with quiet laughter. His hands smoothed over Emery’s temples and down his cheeks. “I’m okay. These guys are here to help, but I think Eleos can probably explain a little better than I can.”

He waved his hand out to the side, and it wasn’t until then that Emery even noticed the Black Fate standing beside Jade. He was dressed in the same white uniform as before, his hair was just as dark, and the moonlight filtering through the tree branches made the blue and green of his face look even more eerie than usual.

“Eleos.” Emery dipped his head in greeting. “Where are your shadows?”

The vampire lifted one shoulder. “Doing their jobs, I suppose. The only reason I’m here is because the princess called for me.”

“I was kidnapped,” Gaius responded indignantly with a cute curl of his upper lip. “It seemed kind of important.”

“Yes, little brother, I get that. However, as you can see…” Eleos trailed off and looked around at the men grouped in the clearing. “You aren’t exactly in danger, are you?”

“How was I supposed to know that?”

“Stick a sock in it,” Emery ordered the quarreling brothers. “Who are these guys and what are we doing in the middle of the woods after dark?”

One of the men dressed in black moved to the middle of the loosely formed circle and crossed his arms over his chest. “Aquarius, but you can call me Q.”

The others followed suit, each stepping forward and stating their names.

“Libra.”

“Cancer. Cer is good, though.”

“Capricorn. They call me Cap.”

“Taurus. I go by Taur.”

“Gemini or Gem.”

“Aries.” He grinned slyly and shook his head. “No relation to the god. Most of these idiots just call me Ries.”

“Pisces.”

“Leo.”

“Sagittarius. It’s a bit of a mouthful, but—”

“That’s what he said,” Q interrupted, and several others snorted and snickered.
