RELEASE AND RESPONSE

Unlike the first film, which had been awarded extra money when studio executives saw the potential to improve the final cut, Tremors 2: Aftershocks was a more straightforward release for Universal Studios Home Entertainment. “We didn’t do focus groups because we didn’t have a budget to reshoot,” said Louis Feola. “We knew who our fanbase was and we were very confident we knew how to reach them.”

For the production team at Stampede Entertainment, the task of bringing a feature film to market under strict time and financial restrictions was both a difficult and rewarding one.

“I’m proud that I was part of the solution of how to take something like that and pour it into its second life on direct-to-video, which is a lesser budget but equally if not more challenging,” mused Chris DeFaria, who later worked as an executive producer on films such as Happy Feet Two (2011) and Gravity (2013). “What can get lost on that transition is the spirit, tone and culture of a show when you make such a radical transition in budget and I’m hugely proud that wasn’t the case here. The second film shares with the first film all of the sensibility, humour and humanity in the midst of a monster movie. That became a lesson for me going forward in all the films I’m doing today.”

The film’s upbeat soundtrack was provided by musician, Jay Ferguson, a founder member of the US rock band, Spirit. “My agent, Vasi Vangelos, submitted me for the film, and I was asked to put together a reel of music for the producers. This being a plum little project I can guarantee there were several other composers with their hat in the ring. I ended up on the short list and was asked to a meeting, which went well. They were a great bunch and I think there was a feeling we could work well together, which proved to be the case.”

Ferguson’s abiding memory of working with the Stampede team was the feeling of “working on a giant home movie; Steve, Ron, Brent and Nancy were definitely un-Hollywood types and the Tremors saga was their baby. It was family and it was literally handmade. They used puppets, for God’s sake! The series always had a solid Southwest flavour, and I think they liked the fact that I could integrate a guitar driven texture into the score along with the more traditional dramatic and horror elements. As a composer you feed off of performances and Fred Ward’s in Tremors 2 was comic gold.”

Tremors 2: Aftershocks was destined for VHS, but it did have an early theatrical outing one month before its release thanks to Brent Maddock. The Los Angeles Times announced that Saturday 9 March, 1996 saw a special screening of the film at Laemmle’s Monica 4-Plex as a fundraiser for Grant Elementary School in Santa Monica, which Maddock’s two children attended.
