Spinning on his heel, Dominic raked fingers through his mahogany hair. He looked at the room one more time and then strode out to do the same with the rest of the apartment.

If it wasn’t for Meredith’s find in the master bath, it would seem no one had occupied the space at all.

“You have good observation skills,” he finally said, knowing that she’d followed him even without turning to see her.

“Looking through the trash is hardly an earth-shattering breakthrough of intelligence.”

She might be right, but he certainly hadn’t thought to do it. Although maybe he would have eventually.

“On the plus side, there’s no evidence of a struggle. No overturned furniture, knocked-over vases or scattered magazines on the floor.”

Once again, Meredith was right. In fact, “Everything is perfectly in its place.” A trademark trait for a lot of abuse victims. It was often a way for them to control a part of the environment when they had no control over other aspects of their lives.

“Someone who’d come to take her back wouldn’t bother to pack all her clothes and toiletries.”

“True,” Dominic said. Grim comfort considering Tessa was still missing. “Something spooked her, though.”

Meredith agreed, nodding. “She ran.”

It was an accurate guess, all things considered. “The question is why?” Dominic spun, slower this time, searching for any clue that might help.

There just weren’t any.

Meredith slowly did the same, coming back to face him with a grim expression pulling at her mouth. “The more important question is where the heck did she go?”

Since the apartment provided them with no clues, they agreed to speak to the neighbors. But Tessa had only been there a very short time, so it was likely they hadn’t even met her yet, let alone seen anything useful.

Several hours later, Dominic’s fears were realized. No one in the building had been able to provide them any help. Empty-handed and getting more concerned by the moment, he called their driver to take them to the hotel.

On the drive, Nic checked in with Joker, giving him the rundown on what they’d found. Or rather, the lack of what they’d found.

Tessa had been given cash, a new identity and all the documents attached to it, including credit cards. However, according to Joker, none of the cards had been used. But that wasn’t surprising given she’d had a crash course on staying off the grid and had plenty of liquid funds at her disposal.

It might take them days or weeks to find her. Which didn’t sit well with Dominic. The unsettling pit in his stomach said she was in trouble.

But more personally, the idea of spending the next several weeks traipsing across Europe with Meredith...it was dangerous on so many levels. Especially now that his memory kept replaying the sight, sound and taste of her.

He knew what they could have together.

He also knew that if he gave in, they’d both regret it. Meredith would want more from him, more than he could give.

Not for the first time, he wondered what it would take to convince her to head home.
