Chapter Eighteen

Monday morning, June 9, 2014

It was after eight when Jackson bolted from his bed, shocked that he had slept so soundly after weeks of disrupted sleep. He took a few minutes to read over the list of questions he’d formulated the previous night about Jenna’s article. Before heading to town to access the library’s high-speed internet to conduct the needed research, he turned on the news to see if the identities of the crash victims had been released. When the eight o’clock lead stories ran, there was only a brief mention about the ongoing investigation of the crash but no reference to the Kaswell women. Jackson breathed a sigh of relief that he still had time to nail the story.

He stepped into the shower and caught himself singing as he washed. Later he started humming as he shaved. He liked the look of the man reflected in the mirror this morning. His smile had returned, and his brown hair was no longer matched by dark bags hanging under his eyes. For the first time in weeks, Jackson James was relaxed and happy.

He looked at the dream catcher hanging on his bedpost, anxious to see its creator, the maker of the delicious aromas seeping under his door. After bounding down the steps, he turned for the kitchen and nearly ran headlong into Bodie, dressed in a green one-piece front-zipped outfit, looking unusually preoccupied.

“Whoa!” yelped Bodie.

“Sorry. Going for the handyman look today?”

“What?” After gazing down at his attire, he replied, “This isn’t an ensemble. I’ve been working by the pool. Looks like a war zone out there. Shrubs are broken, and some animal kicked a bunch of mulch into the pool. I’ll have to close it today to get it cleaned.”

Jackson decided not to elaborate about his clash with Tallie the previous evening. “Sorry about all that. Uh . . . did I miss breakfast? Is Tallie still cooking?”

“Oh, she’s there.” Bodie tossed a worried glance back toward the kitchen. “Be careful.”

Jackson’s cheer dimmed. “Why? What’s going on?”

“She went all postal on Nan at the café last night. The whole town’s on edge because of her questions and her poking around in Cutler’s ancient history. She spent yesterday nosing around Doc Henley’s clinic and harassing people on Main Street. She was all fired up about that newspaper photo she brought and the photos on Nan’s wall.” He craned his neck left and right, peering around the corners, then continued in softer tones. “I took her into town for dinner last night, but Tallie went off because Nan took the photos down. She said Nan knew her mother and that she was hiding things. Heck, Nan’s had the town’s photos on her wall for as long as I can remember, but now they’re gone because of Tallie Brown. What do you make of that?”

Jackson reflected back on Tallie’s conversation about her mother’s death. He could understand her wish to feel something familiar, like floating silently in the darkness. “She just wants to belong somewhere.
