CHAPTER 11

GRAYSON

The bulging veins on my head threatened to jump out of my skin. I had been gone for only two days, 48 hours, and my company was already in chaos.

“Just wait till I get there, I’m going to fire them all,” I muttered under my breath.

I gripped the steering wheel harder than I gripped a dumbbell at the gym. My car was going 300 km/h. My eyes were red with fury. I called John again.

“What’s the status of things right now?” I asked through clenched teeth.

“S-s-sir,” he stuttered.

“Tell me the status of things now or join the bandwagon of people getting fired as soon as I reach the company,” I said.

“W-well uh, sir, everywhere is in chaos. The IT team is trying to trace the anonymous call and everything is in an uproar. We’re also trying to find the document but to no avail,” he said.

I heard someone shout for him over the phone and he shouted back,

“I’m on a call with Mr. Finnegan,” I heard scurried footsteps of whoever was calling him. My mind was in a state of disarray.

How dare they threaten me? Who even dared to awaken this issue that I had so easily put to bed a year ago?

I ran a free hand through my hair while the other controlled the steering. The night sky was gloomy and bereft of any stars. It was only the moon and headlights that gave light to the night. I heard a loud snort over the phone and was instantly made aware that John was still on the phone.

“Here are two things I need you to do,” I said slowly, drawing out each word so the severity of my command dawned on him.

“Okay, sir, anything you say, I’ll do,” he assured hesitantly.

“One, this should be kept between only you and the IT team. Give them the worst threat possible that if this gets out, they’re done for.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Two, call in the big guns, we have to get this guy by midnight tonight.”

“Understood sir!” John bellowed over the phone and I cut the call.

The time was a little over 9:00 p.m.

“I have time,” I murmured and stepped harder on the gas pedal. The nightlights of New York were no longer distant. I had to get to the office before 9:30 p.m. before a little mistake amplified into a grave one.

Why didn’t I take care of it properly immediately? I asked myself. If I had put an end to the persons involved, they wouldn’t have had the audacity to return to me with such boldness and demands.

I sighed deeply. My kindness would be my undoing, I cursed in my mind.

As I let my mind wander over a thousand possibilities, it drifted back to Serena, back to the moment we spent together hours ago.

Her pale skin had glistened in the bright night light of the resort. The way she raised the champagne, twirled the contents of the glass, and downed it had sent me afloat. A woman drinking champagne had never looked sexier.
