CODY

As soon as she left, I poured myself another whiskey, threw it back in one gulp. It still wasn’t enough to steady my hands. I dialed Jack as I poured myself another and sat down.

“What happened?” he asked. “You told me she was coming back to measure something. Did she take off again? Or worse?”

“What do you mean worse?” I asked, guarded.

“I mean, was it just like old times? Did you start measuring the woodwork or something and one thing led to another, and you fucked her on the recliner?”

“Jesus Jack. No, we didn’t sleep together.”

“What did you do? Measure stuff and that was it? Because I doubt you’d call me for that.”

“We kissed. A couple times.”

“Kissed how? In order to give you a ruling on how bad the mistake is, I need to know how.”

“The usual way. On the lips.”

“Tongue or no tongue?”

“Lots of tongue.”

“Groping? Are we talking third base? I’m not sure how to ask these questions without sounding like I’m your guidance counselor,” he chuckled.

“More than a kiss, less than full sex.”

“That leaves a wide-open field, my friend.”

“I kissed her, she kissed me back. I pulled away and she kissed me again.”

“Why do I think there’s more to it than that?”

“Because there’s more to it than that. For one thing, it felt like I could breathe, like whatever had been holding me down was gone and I could take a real breath for once. I wanted to devour her, and she was so responsive, Jack. In that way it was just like old times, when we couldn’t get enough of each other. You remember how it was.”

“I’m sorry to say that I do know how it was. I’m the one who got a full moon when I went looking for you at your own birthday party.”

“It’s not my fault you were looking for me.”

“But was it my fault that you had your pants around your knees and your girlfriend up against the wall?”

“No, but you were the one hunting for me when you knew where I’d be.”

“I did not know you’d be fucking in the hallway, Cody.”

“There was somebody in the bathroom. Everybody was in the living room and kitchen, and if I remember correctly Ford was in the bedroom with some girl he picked up at the party.”

“Anyway, tell me what led up to the kissing. Did talking about carpet turn you on or something?”

“No, that was weird. Leah and I were talking back and forth like we were old friends, joking around, but we had eased into that right after she asked about my parents. I told her I didn’t see them anymore because I don’t live my life to their standards. Right after I said that she just seemed like she, I don’t know, warmed up to me all of a sudden.”

“She’s there on business, mentions your parents, you throw them under the bus and next thing you know she’s dry humping you? Sounds suspicious.”

“How so?”
