Chapter Eleven

Camila took the stairs two at a time. She should have tried to catch a few more hours of sleep, but she knew the coveted rest would have evaded her as she struggled to develop new avenues of investigation.

Preoccupied with the search warrant she’d just received for Katherine Comby’s MeetUp account, she didn’t see Fox until she’d nearly mowed him down.

“Oh shit, I’m so sorry.”

The missing persons detective stared wide-eyed at Camila. “Don’t worry about it, Martinez. From what I’m hearing on the gossip vine, you’ve got a lot on your mind.”

“That’s no excuse.” Camila bent to help retrieve the scattered papers on the narrow landing, desperate to get the hell away before he could ask about Swagger, but one particular photo caught her eye. “Is this Tessa Cox? The yoga instructor?”

“One and the same.” Fox stuffed papers back in his ratty folder. “The stunning YouTube sensation’s boss reported her missing early this morning.”

Camila’s gut tightened. “I’ve caught a few of her live sessions. She does them nightly, doesn’t she?”

“Supposed to.” Fox smacked his gum loudly. “According to her boss, she put up a notice right before last night’s session was supposed to start. Stated she’d gone on vacation, which was news to him. He tried calling her all night and even went by her apartment. Nothing.”

Camila’s Spidey-sense tingled. Two women whose lives revolved around computers went on vacations right before they went missing? She didn’t think so. “How much work have you done on it?”

“This isn’t like homicide, Martinez, I’m up to my eyeballs in these.”

“It wasn’t a criticism, Fox. This may be related to one of my cases. Mind if I hold on to this for a while; do some digging?”

“It’s all yours. Let me know if it doesn’t pan out, I’ll take it back.”

Camila sprinted up the remaining steps, mentally drafting the search warrant she’d submit for Tessa Cox’s residence and records. It wasn’t a coincidence both women had gone missing. She’d bet her favorite Ferragamo pumps the first victim had also been in a profession that allowed her to work from home every day.

At her desk, she put in a call to the DA. After grumbling about being called twice on the same weekend, he promised to find a judge willing to sign the warrant. Camila hung up the phone and called Sasha.

“Yo?” her friend answered after the first ring.

“I need a favor. This is police business so no blabbing to anyone else, okay?”

“Sheesh, we’ve been friends forever, you know I wouldn’t do that. What do you need?”

“It’s just a hunch, but can you check MeetUp’s profiles and see if Tessa Cox has one?”

“Tessa Cox? Is that a code name for I’ll-test-your-cocks? Wicked.”

“This is serious, Sasha.”

“Fine, hang on while I put you on speaker.”

Camila heard the rustling of cars in the background. “Where are you?”

“I just had brunch with the most boring accountant on the face of the earth. You could have come along if you hadn’t been working on yet another Sunday.”

“The dead don’t always get to choose when they die.
