Chapter 22

The sound of horns beeping and voices yelling made its way into Jessie’s office through the open window. It was just another day in London. If the unrelenting heat wasn’t bad enough, some faceless jobsworth thought it would be a great idea to close off a lane on the busy road outside her office. As a result, the traffic jams were long and tempers were frayed.

“Just when I thought my day couldn’t get any worse,” Tilly said, as she burst into Jessie’s office and slapped down a pile of files on her desk.

Jessie stopped what she was doing and looked up at her, noticing tinges of red steadily working their way up Tilly’s face. There seems to be a lot of anger going around, she mused as she laid the folder aside that she had been reading.

“What’s wrong?” she asked.

Tilly pulled a scornful face. “The in-laws are coming for the weekend.”

“Oh, that is bad.” Jessie had heard more than enough about Carl’s parents to be grateful that it was something she herself didn’t have to deal with.

“Are you kidding? It’s worse than bad. Carl’s mum is convinced I’m some kind of ogre for not pushing out a precious grandchild.”

Jessie noticed the wet patches visible in the armpits of Tilly’s shirt and, not for the first time that day, prayed for autumn to hurry up and come. Britain was best known for its dull, grey rainy days, not sweltering summers. That’s why, when they had rented the place in winter, she hadn’t been too concerned about the lack of air conditioning. She was kicking herself now though.

Jessie leaned back in her chair, breezing herself with a hand-held fan, which didn’t even have enough pressure to move a strand of her hair, such was its uselessness. “I’m sure they’d understand if they knew the whole story.”

“I doubt it, but it doesn’t matter. They would never believe it. Carl’s the golden boy who can do no wrong. It’s much easier for him to let them blame me for being childless.”

“What are you going to do?”

“I dunno, Jess. Sometimes I wonder if I’m doing the right thing even staying married to him. I mean, look at me. I’m not even thirty yet and he expects me to live like a nun.”

Jessie raised her eye brows. “Surely he doesn’t think things can go on indefinitely like this?”

“You wanna bet? If he thinks he can get away with something he will. He knows I’m too set in my ways to do anything about the situation.”

“But what will he do if you meet someone else ... someone who can give you what you want?”

Tilly looked at Jessie as if she were sitting naked in her chair. “Like that’s ever gonna happen. Where am I going to meet this mystery man? My whole life revolves around work and watching TV at home with Carl.”

This was what Jessie didn’t get. How could Tilly put up with living like that? Was it a sign of weakness on her behalf?
