Chapter Eight
Elric was as elated and happy as he was thousands of years ago when he and Scott still lived together in the home Scott had built on his farm. He laughed and smiled as Scott did, and they spoke much over their meal of fish.
“How did you know I didn’t just save you from those hunters to eat you myself?” Scott asked, and the little imp had a playful grin upon his face.
Elric turned the fish on the fire. They were small things, so he had to catch and cook many of them for their bellies to be even remotely sated. “I knew when you didn’t immediately snap my neck and pluck at my feathers,” he replied. “You returned to your home with me and set to tending to my wounds, not knowing what I really was.”
“Kind of strange for a person to do when they lived back then, day to day.”
Elric could not help but smile. “I think you had some selfish motivation. There was pity for me, but I believe you wished to train me to catch rabbits for you. Imagine your surprise when I shifted, revealing myself to be more than what I was. You did not have to train me at all after that. All you needed to do was ask, for I was in love with you almost from the start and would do any simple trick you requested.”
“I doubt I had you fetch things for me.”
Elric knew what he meant by that word. Not simply fetching a fish or a small animal, but a stick or a toy for a game.
“Actually,” Elric said, and he could not bring himself to finish.
They both laughed at that as they ate.
Scott’s body was warm and comfortable in Elric’s arms, and the man was full of questions that there had been no time for earlier. He wanted to know as much about their former lives as Elric could tell him. He also wanted to know as much about Elric, all the way down to his favorite food and color.
“I would have to say that pheasant is my favorite. Any sort of bird, really, especially your chickens.”
“In that case, I’m so taking you to KFC after we get back to Rowan’s pack. You’re going to love that stuff.”
Elric was only vaguely aware of what a KFC was after years spent underground, slipping in and out of consciousness and listening to travelers speaking to each other. “I will have to trust you on your word that I would enjoy it,” Elric said.
Scott insisted that he would, just as he insisted on chatting about the many things he enjoyed in this new world, things that he was certain Elric would enjoy as well. Music, video games, certain arts and films.
Elric could not wait to sample all of these things with his lover, and he kissed the side of his head as they both watched the fire.
It had basically been decided that they would both spend the night here. After their time spent lovemaking and feasting, neither had the energy for more travel.
