Beth woke to the sound of a murmuring male voice and a hand stroking her hair and face. She kept her eyes closed and her breathing even. This wasn’t Oscar, he never had been touchy-feeling and never this tender.

As she lay there, she thought of Mark Twain’s quote about how a lie can travel halfway around the world in the time it took the truth to put its boots on. Trying to get her sleep-drunk mind engaged, she was pretty sure the truth was totally dressed already.

She wasn’t a morning person, and a man in her bedroom was too confusing. But if not for running on all cylinders, she would have had a hard time making sense of the situation. More and more detail of last night trickled into her befuddled brain—sparring, kissing, coming, then the bath and Nash swaddling her in a big towel, drying her, pulling panties up her legs, tenderly kissing her belly before pulling a nightgown over her head, and tucking her in bed. His bed! The realization drove the last remnants of sleep from her head. Beth blinked open her eyes. Nash, gorgeous hair wet and slicked back, fresh casual clothes, and the delicious scent of his expensive shower gel clinging to his body, sat beside her, and was caressing her face.

“Good morning, babygirl.” He pulled back his hand and sat straighter.

Realizing she’d sucked her thumb again, Beth removed the digit from her mouth and slid the offending hand under the cover. She’d been struggling to drop the habit all her life but didn’t seem to be able to help herself. A tingling swept up the back of her neck and across her face. Great, now she was blushing! As her mind struggled to come up with a valid explanation or excuse, she offered a lame, “Hi.”

His smile flashed but disappeared so fast, Beth thought she might have imagined the tender expression on his face. She blinked and serious Nash was back.

Feeling at a disadvantage with him looming over her, she lay on her back with her legs tangled in the sheets. She struggled into an upright position. She couldn’t read his expression. Is he mad at me? Does he regret last night? Maybe he’s angry because I got off and didn’t reciprocate. Her mind was going a mile a minute but instead of giving her answers, she only could think of more questions. Unable to maintain eye contact, Beth turned her gaze to the comforter and traced the intricate patterns on the comforter with her index finger.

The silence hung heavy and uncomfortable between them. Her heartbeat raced worse than when she rushed through the Kansas City streets away from Café Man. Her stomach did an uncomfortable flip, and she felt hot and cold at the same time.

Her head full of worries and questions, she seemed to be incapable of coming to a reasonable decision. Should she stay in bed? Leave the bedroom? Try to talk with Nash? He looked like he didn’t like her one bit and like he didn’t want her in his bed.
