Certainly! Alchemy begins with dissolution, putrefaction, calcination, and thus, conflict. Then come evaporation, coagulation, and so forth. Art is an alchemical process. Before arriving at the expression of beauty, one must manifest the difficulties, the tensions. If one attempts to short-circuit the shadows to arrive directly at beauty, one produces an art of rosewater, without density or substance. An art exempt from conflict is an art without history and, therefore, without anything at stake. Consequently you are right to ask me to explain it. For me this is not a matter of achieving an art that is supposedly “pure,” which would expel the development process and the shadows. On the contrary I insist on the necessity to not remain in illness; one must make art into a way of healing rather than a morbid indulgence in abnormality. Art is a great path, which I have followed.
