Chapter Fifteen

“Bye, Mr. Kote.” The babysitter, Rachel, threw Elias a wave as he stood in the driveway and watched her get into her car.

He granted her a nod. “Thanks for watching Maddie.” She was a college student whose brother worked for Lucky. He’d volunteered his sister when Lucky voiced their need for a babysitter. Of course, Elias had done his due diligence and done an extensive background check on Rachel. He was domesticated, but not by much. Anyone spending more than sixty seconds in his family’s presence got vetted. Lucky knew he’d looked up their daughter’s babysitter, but Elias doubted Lucky knew just how deep he’d searched.

Rachel drove off and he waited until the mechanical gate closed again, locking securely and activating the silent alarm that fed into his phone. Lucky’s too. Providing security for their home had been an exercise in creativity since he couldn’t very well be upfront and tell Lucky that they needed to be protected from the people he used to work for. He’d used his time traveling abroad as an excuse. Lucky accepted that explanation when Elias showed him how to shoot a gun, as well. Lucky took him at his word, why would he expect his husband to lie? His abuse of that innate trust stuck in Elias’s throat, but it couldn’t be helped.

Not if the alternative was a life without Lucky and Maddie.

He shrugged off the heavy thoughts as he walked back into the house, hands in his pockets. He locked up and set the alarm then made his way upstairs to where he knew Lucky was, in Maddie’s bedroom.

In the doorway he stood, arms crossed over his chest, and watched Lucky as he touched the top of their sleeping daughter’s head then bent to kiss her. The sight did something to him, seeing Lucky like this. Happy. He’d wanted a family, one to call his own ever since he was sixteen years old. Elias had seen that in him then and he was fucking glad that he got to be the one to fulfill that dream. Lucky was amazing as a dad, wonderful with Maddie, and she had him, both of them really, wrapped around her stubby fingers.

He walked into the room and slid his arms around Lucky’s waist, heart melting when he glanced down to see Maddie smiling in her sleep. “You’re gonna wake her,” he whispered. Rachel had dressed her in her tiny yellow nightgown with the white hearts. Her dark hair was brushed away from her forehead, pursed lips moving slightly as she breathed.

Their most precious commodity. The best gift he’d ever received.

“Come on.” He murmured into Lucky’s ear. “Let the kid sleep.”

Lucky settled against his chest, head in the crook of Elias’s shoulder. “I can do this all night,” Lucky said softly. “Stand here and watch her sleep, and never ever get bored.”

“I know.” Elias kissed his ear. “But then I’ll start feeling neglected, and you know that’s not a good look on me.”

Lucky shook with quiet laughter. “No, it’s not.
