CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Milly prepared a wonderful lunch, or dinner as the big noon meal is called in farm country. Country fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, scalloped corn and baking powder biscuits. If I ate like this every day, I’d have to work out twice as hard at the gym. I groaned, and pushed back from the table after eating more than my share. “No wonder Mom’s such a great cook. She learned all of your tricks in the kitchen.”

She blushed at the compliment. She probably wasn’t used to having people say nice things to her. “Have you talked to her lately?” she asked, “I keep hoping she’ll come see us.”

“Dad thinks he’s got her convinced. Wouldn’t you like to go back with them? I know Mom would love to have you with her, even for a little while. The twins can show you all their sports trophies.”

Remembering what Mr. S. had said the day before, I asked, “Does he think Mom disgraced the family because she married my birth father? I remember he was a nice man.”

Milly shook her head. “He had it in his head she should marry Young Ed. It was an insult when his only daughter wouldn’t obey his orders.” She shook her head again. “It wasn’t like we were living in the eighteen hundreds. Girls pick their own husbands now. I never could figure out what he was thinking.”

“He said you should come home, Grandma, but he’s not going to change if you do.” I didn’t want her going back into an abusive situation.

“Oh, I probably will someday, just not right now.” She patted my hand. “Don’t worry yourself about it. Everything will work itself out.”

I didn’t want to leave her alone, but I couldn’t make her come with me either. She had to make her own decisions just like everyone else.

Gus was glad to see us when we pulled into the lane. He paced back and forth between us and the road, sniffing at the ground. The big meal I’d just eaten threatened to make a return appearance when my stomach lurched. Someone had been here while we were gone.

“He’s trying to show us something.” Shep pointed to a small mound of meat at the end of the lane. “Keep him here; I’ll see what it is.” Using a rag he’d taken out of the back of his truck, he examining it before bringing it back to me.

“Someone threw him some raw meat. Good thing he didn’t eat it.” He held up several capsules he found stuck in the meat. “He’d either be unconscious or dead if he had.”

Once again, I had to call the sheriff. This was getting old. I by-passed his dispatcher as he’d suggested. “I’ll have the capsules analyzed by the state lab,” he told us. “I don’t know what it will prove beyond someone was trying to poison your dog.”

“You know who did it,” I stated heatedly. “It had to be Abner or Walter Shepard or Ed Bodeen.”

The sheriff nodded in agreement.
