1.19 A Person of Interest
(Aired February 28, 2011 | Written by I. Marlene King &
Jonell Lennon | Directed by Ron Lagomarsino)
Aria: “Whoever said the truth will set you free never met A.”
Taking place in tents, hotel rooms, karaoke dive bars, and distant parks, the setting of “A Person of Interest” mirrors the characters as they bravely explore new territory, even though these bold explorations mean making themselves vulnerable.
The heart of this episode belongs to the parallel sleepovers with seemingly strange bedfellows. Hanna decides to tear up her V-Club membership. Intimacy can be intimidating enough, but Han really lays herself bare when she opens up to Caleb about fat camp. Caleb seems to recognize this, and, in turn, tells her about being abandoned by his mom — parental abandonment is something Hanna understands all too well. Though we’ve seen the greatest change in Emily in the show so far, moments like this one highlight that Hanna’s also transformed. She’s not the guarded, snippy teen queen she was: she’s softer and more sensitive, a kinder gentler Hanna who’s left a lot of her former superficiality behind. You can also see it in her choice of partner: she’s traded her homecoming king for a hobo-hatted outcast, and the change looks good on her.
While Hanna goes all the way, Spencer takes it at her own pace, but her party for two is just as exciting. In a sense, Spencer’s taking the bigger chance, spooning with the former enemy. It’s endearing to see our model of composure lose her shirt and tie, and let someone in (even if she still has to be the big spoon — no surprises there). The scene helps us warm up to Toby too, who is still making up ground he lost in his days as prime suspect and for his pseudo-incestuous past. What’s a little sibling action compared to besting Spencer at Scrabble? He’s taking a chance too — after all, Spencer was a mean girl involved in blinding his sister. Their light-of-day, public parking lot kiss is as brave and trusting a move as Han and Caleb’s campfire embrace.
Aria’s leap of faith isn’t about physical intimacy (and it’s still unclear whether Aria and Ezra have crossed into illegal territory there), but about emotional intimacy. She comes clean about her involvement in The Jenna Thing, and Fitz handles it as well as he handles screaming parents in the cafeteria, calmly and sensitively. His absolution is more important than any between-the-sheets action, and this relationship, the most scandalous of the series, emerges as the most solid.
With Emily and Paige, we see two people unwilling to take chances. Paige is into Emily and willing to take a chance on the relationship, but fears the fallout of being openly gay. Emily, on the other hand, is willing to venture into dive bars and onto a karaoke stage, but she won’t be revisiting her old stomping grounds in the closet. She’s come too far on her journey and isn’t about to backtrack now.
