Abbie

"Those little fuckers!" Zeke growled. He started towards the door but stopped a couple of metres from it.

"They'll be long gone by now. I should have been there. I would have kicked their asses into the next millennia. Or the one after that." His face was red with fury.

Asher and I moved to comfort him and bumped into each other. He put out a hand to steady me, and we both half laughed.

"Sorry." I slipped an arm around Asher and another around Zeke. "I wholeheartedly support your desire to kick their asses. They freaked the fuck out of me when they walked into the room."

"I'll bet they did." Zeke pulled me closer so my head was resting against his shoulder.

Asher did the same on the other side so we were all pressed together, sharing heat and muscle.

"Not to mention the waste of chocolate mousse," Asher groaned.

"That might just be the worst part of all," I said, grimacing against the smooth fabric of Zeke’s shirt. It wasn't the worst part, not even close, but whatever it took to lighten the mood.

The twins scared the crap out of me without even trying, without even threatening us or waving guns at us. They’d assaulted me and Penn, I had no idea how far they might go on Reuben’s orders. I didn't particularly want to find out. If it was worse than what they'd already done, then it would be pretty fucking horrible.

"I'm sorry," Zeke whispered so only we could hear. "I should have dealt with them somehow. They've been a thorn in my side for so long. If I'd known they were going to haunt us on this tour…"

"What could you do?" Asher asked. "You're not the kind of person who goes around killing indiscriminately. You did what you could to distance yourself from the rest of the family. What's left after that?"

Zeke's shoulder twitched when he shrugged slightly. "Beat the shit out of them until they promise to leave us alone?" He sighed. "Yeah, I know. I wouldn't have done that either. Even if it's a good idea. Maybe I need to rethink my attitude towards gratuitous violence."

"Reuben would love that," Asher said ironically. "Right before he welcomes you back into the family and closes the door behind you. That's the whole reason you walked away, remember?"

"Not the whole reason," Zeke said softly. He pressed the side of his face against Asher's and smiled down at me. "I wanted to know the people I love weren't going to get stuck in the middle of some gangland war. It happened anyway."

"If this is where you say, maybe we should break up to keep us safe, no deal," I said firmly. "We're in this with you until the end. No matter what happens. I'm not walking away from you."

Even as I said that, my heart raced. If he wanted to walk away from me, from us, I couldn't stop him. Not really. When it came down to it, we had only known each other for a few months.
