We sat in the corner of McDonald's—not the one by the library, because it didn't exist. This was a different one, at the other end of High Street. Welly devoured a Big Mac while he listened to me explaining that I was, in fact, a ghost: a spirit from the other side, a specter, a spook, a phantom, or, to put it bluntly, a freshly dead person. None of this news seemed to put him off his burger, although his mouth kept dropping open in astonishment, revealing bits of chewed-up gherkin and tomato relish. It was not a pretty sight. How he must have looked to the other customers I don't know. As far as they were concerned, Welly was sitting on his own, gawping at an empty chair. I had to keep reminding him that the vast majority of the human race couldn't see me and that he should keep his voice down before somebody carted him off to the nearest mental hospital.
