An hour later, I get a text message from Jazz.

You still love her, don’t you?

I look at the screen of my smart phone. How do I even begin to explain my thoughts to her? She’s definitely mature for her age, but this kind of grown folks business is best understood by those who have some life experience.

Your mom will always be special to me. She gave me you, I text.

A few seconds later, Jazz responds, Well I guess it’s a good thing you don’t live in Nashville—because if you did, things would get pretty crazy, huh?

I don’t know how to respond. My heart falls like a stone into my stomach. I want to tell her about Vandenheuval University, but the time couldn’t be any worse. I’m starting to feel like she wants to keep Carmen and me apart from each other, geographically. I can’t possibly have this conversation with her now.

Instead, I type, LOL!, and I tell her we can get together for a birthday breakfast, if she’s up for it.

She agrees.
