Chapter 13

Carla

“Thanks, Chip, you’re a lifesaver,” I tell him as he pulls to a stop in front of the high school. My car picked tonight to not start, and I was thanking the Lord for answering my prayers. I didn’t have to come tonight. But nope, Martha was having none of that and called Chip to pick me up. Even paid the fare, leaving no reason for me to not attend tonight.

“Happy to be. Plus, you just made me one step closer to that new ride of mine. Have fun and if you need me, you have my number. Make sure to call early; I have a feeling I’m going to be a busy man this weekend.” I slide him a tip as I exit the rear passenger door of his blue wood panel passenger van. My eyes linger on the joker smile tattoo on his right hand. He was always my favorite character, even though he was the bad guy.

Once I’m out of the van, I give him an awkward wave as he pulls off, no doubt headed off to pick up his next ride. Taking a deep breath, I know it’s now or never. Jack’s is still laying there, thankfully, but Dominic’s is gone. Which means he is already here.

Breathing in deeply and slowly blowing it out, I open the gym door and step inside. I scan the crowd, looking for the one man I came here to see. I’m filled with both worry and relief when I don’t spot him, but then out of the corner of my eye, I see him. He’s standing arm in arm with a woman with blue hair. There are two men on either side of them, one of which is the man from the diner yesterday. Dominic has his head thrown back, laughing at something one of them said, and I know at this moment I’ve misread the situation. Maybe they weren’t together, he’s with her. Or are they all together?

I keep to the outskirts of the room, taking my time, stopping at each of the tables to look at my classmates’ then and now pictures. Many haven’t changed at all, but a few have, like Dominic.

Instead of the once shy, meek boy now stands a strong, confident man, and I’m happy for him. Me, well, I went
