“YOU OKAY?” Eli asked Kollin for the fiftieth time as they neared his school.

“I told you I’m fine. It’s not a big deal.”

“You know he didn’t mean any of what he said. Right?”

Kollin sighed. Of course he knew that. Sorta. Maybe. But didn’t most people say what they really meant when they got all worked up and let their guard down? They might regret it later, because who wanted to let those shameful feelings out. But at the time, they really and truly meant it. “Doesn’t matter. It’s not like he even said anything bad about me.”

“Implying your therapy isn’t important is not okay. Nor is putting us down for how we’ve tried to support him. He knows that. I need to make sure you do too.”

“I get it. Okay, Eli? I’m not going to suddenly flounce therapy because Adam’s having a midlife crisis.”

“Is there anything you want to talk to me about?”

Kollin groaned. He loved Eli. He really did. And most of the time, when Adam wasn’t bogged down with all the parental shit he had to deal with, living with Eli and Adam was the best thing ever. They included him in everything. They never judged him and always told him how proud they were of him and how much they loved him. They gave him enough freedom to feel like he was getting away with shit, but not enough that he actually did get away with shit, and he always knew, without a doubt, he could go to them with any problem he had.

Sometimes he was right…. Not that he’d ever admit it to Eli.

“Can I please go to school without the third degree? I’ll process my feelings while I’m there, and we can do our nails and talk about it tonight.”

“You’re not getting near my nails again,” Eli muttered.

“You’re no fun,” Kollin said, relieved he’d dropped it. “Besides, you rocked that black polish… for the two seconds you wore it.”

Eli rolled his eyes, but Kollin saw the smile on his face. “Get to class, kid. Love you.”

“Love you too.” Kollin opened his door but stopped before getting out. “I promise I’ll let you know if and when I need to talk. Okay?”

He stood quickly and slammed the door before Eli had a chance to pull him into another conversation. He hadn’t lied to Eli, but he worried about Adam. He’d been so relieved to see Adam smile the night before that he hadn’t stopped to really look at him. Thinking back on it, he saw the missed signs. He didn’t know what to do with this Adam, who seemed far more broken than Eli ever had.

Eli had been one hell of a hot mess, but at least he had a grasp on what bothered him. He just constantly fought it. Adam looked like a feral cat who’d just
