The Glyn Johns technique. An additional microphone can be added and placed close to the snare drum. Engineers can then keep the snare and kick panned to the centre and slightly pan the microphone placed above the kit, while panning the microphone placed facing the snare from the side of the floor tom slightly more to the left or right. Depending on perspective, this can open up the overall image of the kit.

Two Shure SM57 dynamic microphones positioned top and bottom of the snare drum. Remember to flip/invert the polarity on the channel into which the microphone underneath the snare is plugged.
