Roman pulled onto Adam’s property. He should probably apologize, but right now, he had to concentrate on being positive. The sheriff wasn’t supposed to show up for another hour. That meant small talk and hiding his present mood from his brother. That would be difficult. Adam read him better than anyone. He got out of the truck and walked around to open Kaia’s door. She was already climbing down.

“I would appreciate it if you didn’t say anything to Adam about my plans for later. It will just upset him.”

“It’s your family, Roman. I don’t have any right to tell you how to handle things. I don’t like your plans, but I won’t interfere.”

“Hey, are you two coming in or what?” Adam called from the front porch.

Roman waved a hand toward him then closed the door as Kaia moved to walk around him. He closed the door and grasped her elbow. “Thank you,” he said, before turning his attention to his brother. “He looks happy.”

Then the other car in the driveway registered. Adam hadn’t said anything about company. Roman tensed. He did not like surprises.

“Relax,” Kaia whispered from beside him. “It’s Gillian’s car. The nurse from the clinic.”

Roman glanced down at her then toward Adam. So that’s why he looked so happy. He held the door for Kaia and then took Adam’s hand. “Hey, little brother, is lunch ready? I’m starving. Hey, Gillian.”

“Hi, Roman. I hope you don’t mind.”

“It’s not my house. Besides, I’m the one who wangled a late invitation. It should be me apologizing. Adam should have told me he had company.”

She blushed, but smiled. “I’m from a big family. At meal time, the more the merrier we always say. Come on, we’ve got the table ready.”

“Nice save,” Kaia whispered joining him in the hallway.

Roman grinned. “Can you believe those two? We did just leave here a couple of days ago, right?”

The smile on Kaia’s lips tempted him to have dessert before lunch. Looking away, he reminded himself of his decision last night. Nothing could happen between them. She was off limits. Not only was she too good for him, he was not on the market. With his history, marriage was the last thing he needed. Images of his father berating his mother doused the last of his desire. No, he wouldn’t risk hurting someone that way.

“How are you settling in, Kaia?”

Gillian’s question pulled him back to the present. Taking his seat, he glanced around to see if anyone seemed to notice his lapse. Thankfully, Adam seemed intent on Gillian, so he was safe there. When his gaze reached Kaia, he knew he hadn’t been as lucky there. Concern colored her eyes. Had she said something to him? Man he needed to get away from this place. He wasn’t sure how long he could keep thinking up cover stories for his wandering thoughts. She blinked and turned toward Gillian.

“Yes, though there’s a lot of work to do in a place that’s been empty so long. Roman’s done a lot of the repair work, but I need to start cleaning and painting.
