Roman

Shock I can’t hide is all over my face when I see Kiara and Rhett walk into the dojo. I’d just sparred with Sensei Dalton and we were taking a breather, drinking water and chatting. I immediately set my water down and rush over to her.

The dojo is quiet tonight, as there was a late afternoon class that just ended and none scheduled for tonight. I’d texted Kiara last night but she hadn’t responded. I’d been so flustered I’d forgotten to give her the address and remembered like fifteen minutes later I hadn’t included it in the message.

“I’m so glad you’re here!” I say, taking her coat. I look down at Rhett. “Shoes off, little man. Bare feet only in the dojo.” I wink at him.

“Yay,” Rhett replies, ripping the Velcro from the tops and tossing his shoes onto a chair.

Kiara looks gorgeous in tight black yoga pants, a zip-up sweatshirt, and sneakers, her hair in a high ponytail. She slowly removes her shoes and sets them under a chair, and then puts her son’s shoes next to them.

I’m, of course, in my Gi and she smirks as she looks me up and down. Nate’s woman does the same thing. Why is my Gi funny? I’ll ask her later, I guess.

“You ready to get your as... butt kicked?” I ask her, glancing at her son to see if he saw my almost-slipup.

She laughs. “Sure.”

“I’m gonna kick your butt, Roman!” Rhett says, putting up his fists.

I chuckle and ruffle his light-brown hair. “I’d like to see you try!”

“Who do we have here?” Dalton asks.

“This is Kiara and her son Rhett. They want to learn some self-defense moves.”

Dalton claps once, his bald head gleaming under the fluorescents. “That’s great. Women should always know how to defend themselves. First off, do you have a taser or some pepper spray?”

Kiara chews her lip and looks at me, then at Dalton. “No, I don’t.”

“There’s a shop on Twenty-Second that sells military and police gear. They have pepper spray there you can purchase. Heck, I think they even sell it online now, too,” Dalton says.

“I’ll keep that in mind,” Kiara says, looking overwhelmed.

I look at Dalton and point to the kid. “Wanna show him some moves?”

“Heck yes!” Dalton says, offering Rhett a high-five. He returns it and they move to the other side of the mats.

I grab Kiara’s hand and set her in the middle of our area. I start by showing her how to get into a T-stance. “This will ensure your balance is stable in case something comes at you.”

“Like this?” she says, placing her feet in the shape of a T.

I go behind her and put my hands lightly on her hips. “Are you left- or right-handed?”

“Right,” she replies.

“Okay,” I say, pulling her right leg back slightly, “that means your right leg is the strongest. It’s your support.”

“That makes sense,” she says quietly.

I glance over to see Dalton and Rhett working on some light moves, and the smile on Rhett’s face is so damn adorable.
