5.2.3 Radical Rightâs Multifaceted Concerns on Refugee Crisis
The concerns of radical right parties in various European countries with regard to the refugee crisis are far-reaching and encompass a multitude of aspects, reflecting both deep-seated security-related apprehensions and intricate socio-economic anxieties. Drawing insights from a broad spectrum of viewpoints, these concerns can be synthesised into several key themes that elucidate their multifaceted apprehensions and critiques.
In a resolute assertion, radical right parties across Europe label the European refugee crisis as the second largest and gravest crisis since the aftermath of World War II. This perspective underscores their unwavering belief in the gravity of the situation and is marked by deep-seated alarm over the far-reaching implications of uncontrolled mass migration. Such concerns imbue them with a firm resistance against the notion of open borders, which they perceive as an unsustainable remedy that could inadvertently worsen the crisis.
A prevalent concern among the radical right is the notion that liberal migration policies and an excessively accommodating approach inadvertently act as rewards for illegal immigration and the so-called asylum industry or asylum tsunami. They expound on their position by highlighting a perceived relaxation of migration laws under the influence of various advocacy groups. These critics contend that the provision of financial incentives to refugees may inadvertently attract migrants driven solely by economic motives, and potentially overwhelming host countriesâ resources.
FPÃ, PS, PVV, and VB articulate their concerns by shedding light on the societal and economic ripples generated by ongoing immigration. They argue that unchecked mass migration bears the potential to amplify ethnic and interreligious tensions, exacerbate crime rates, and contribute to unemployment (posing additional pressure to low-qualified local workers) and public safety. These perspectives are underscored by their genuine apprehension that unregulated immigration could not only strain local economies but also pose a genuine threat to the very fabric of social stability. At the core of their stance lies a fervent opposition to the notion of a comprehensive European solution to the crisis. This opposition extends to their scepticism towards the idea of quotas. In their view, such proposals are deemed misleading and propagandistic, representing endorsements of illegal mass migration. Conversely, all the parties offer an alternative approach to the refugee crisis: one involving stringent border controls and the establishment of camps along the perimeters of EU borders.
Along these lines, critical attention is drawn to government accountability and law enforcement. In Austria and Finland, for instance, FPÃ and PS express concerns about underfunding law enforcement, which is overwhelmed due to the impact of mass migration. At the same time, all parties perceive the governmentâs failure to enforce EU regulations and exercise adequate border control. They emphasise instances where the government appears to have permitted unregulated migration regardless of migrantsâ motives, thereby undermining the EUâs concerted efforts to manage the crisis. The current situation, for the radical right, proves that the EU is unable to control its borders, and the existing irresponsible migration policy fuels radical-Islamic tendencies in entering European countries and stressing that one could thematise the role of Islam and how Islamistic institutions benefitted from EU funding.
