I employed a basic grounded theory approach, modeled after Strauss and Corbin (1990), to address my research question. The following section will provide more information about the text analyzed, the television show TransGeneration, and the procedures used to analyze the data.

Text: I chose to analyze the television series TransGeneration because of the attention it received after its release and its widespread availability to popular audiences via the Sundance Channel and Netflix. Chen and Waterman (2007) contend that, though considered a premium channel because of its lack of advertising support, the Sundance Channel is provided by many carriers in the basic cable package. The authors also point out that the providers offering the Sundance Channel only as a premium channel typically do so at lower rates than other paid channels such as Showtime and HBO. Individuals with a paid Netflix subscription can also view the show for free online or by ordering the episodes on disk. Through this venue alone, the show has received over 45,000 viewer ratings.

World of Wonder produced TransGeneration in cooperation with the Sundance Channel. The documentary series aired beginning in September 2005 and consisted of eight episodes. The first and last episodes lasted approximately 54 minutes each, and all other episodes lasted between 25 and 27 minutes each. The television show followed four transgender college students: Gabbie, Lucas, Raci, and T.J. Gabbie, a sophomore computer science major at the University of Colorado–Boulder, and Raci, a freshman English major at California State–LA, both identified as male-to-female transgender persons. Lucas, a senior neuroscience major at Smith College, and T.J., a graduate student in Student Affairs Administration at Michigan State University, identified as female-to-male transgender persons. The series showcased different aspects of the characters’ transitions, from crossdressing to hormones and, in one case, sex reassignment surgery.
