Brooklyn walked into my office and sat down in the chair across from me. Every morning, we spent a few minutes together going over my schedule and talking about what I needed to do for the day or week.

Unlike previous days, she wasn’t smiling. She had her hair pulled back into a high ponytail instead of straightened. She also had a cup of coffee from across the street in her hand. Normally, she only drank water. I’d seen her fill her water bottle up a few times each day.

“Your lawyer left a message that he will be here around nine this morning. I moved your meeting with the research team to this afternoon. If you want, I can move it to tomorrow, but you have the morning open.”

I leaned back in my chair and crossed my arms. “This afternoon is fine, but are you okay?” I hoped I wasn’t stumbling onto a land mine.

“I’m fine. I had a long, hard weekend and didn’t get enough sleep. I promise I’ll get my work done. I just need a little extra coffee.”

The door opened, and Jared walked into my office and took the seat next to Brooklyn. His eyes scanned my assistant for a second. He wasn’t checking her out. I could guarantee he was thinking the same thing as I was. Is she in trouble?

“I’m not worried about you getting your work done. Kaylene and Lily really like you, and you do an impressive job of keeping me organized. If something is going on at home and we can help, let us know.”

Brooklyn crossed her arms and glared. Yep, I’d stood right on a land mine, and it was about to explode. Jared’s lip twitched. He also knew it was coming.

“If I need anything, I’ll ask. This morning, I was on time and fixed your schedule after your lawyer messed it all up. But I know you need to talk to him, so it’s scheduled. If, and I mean if, I need your help, I will ask. I’m not the type to bring my personal problems to work.”

“See? She’s an excellent employee. We need to have her run our employee orientation on what to do and not do at work,” Jared added.

Brooklyn turned her eyes on my brother. “You bring your personal baggage to work every day, but nobody calls you out because they’re worried they might get fired.”

“And you’re not?” Jared countered.

I rested my elbows on my desk. “No, she doesn’t have to worry about you firing her because I won’t allow it. And, Brooklyn, I’ll back out of your personal life, but if you need anything, I’m here for you, or you can tell Lily, and she will get you what you need.”

Brooklyn nodded and stood up. “I’ll send Mr. Carson in when he gets here.” She turned on her heel and left the room.

Jared tapped his fingers on the chair. My brother wore his normal scowl, but it more than likely had to do with the fact that Kaylene had gone on a date that weekend.
