Chapter 7

Jackson clenched his fists and tried to look nonchalant as Max and Hayden walked into the living room. He didn’t want either man to know how much that kiss with Hayden had rattled him. To say it had unnerved him would be an understatement. It had been the most astounding kiss he had ever experienced.

And the saddest.

It had come from a straight man.

Jackson was doomed. None of his previous lovers or even his dates had kissed like Hayden. The man seemed to have the ability to make Jackson forget where he was and why he was there.

Hell, Hayden had rocked his world.

Jackson wanted more, and sadly, he knew it would never happen. Hayden was about as straight as he could possibly be. Just because he kissed like a dream didn’t mean the man wanted to get involved with another man.

And if Jackson’s supervisor ever discovered how intense that kiss had been or how much Jackson wanted it—and craved another—he’d be written up and kicked right out of the FBI. He’d never get another job in the intelligence business again. He would always have a black mark on his name.

The gay agent that fell for man he was supposed to be protecting.

He’d be a laughingstock of the entire agency.

And it was almost worth it to feel Hayden’s soft and delicious lips pressed against his once again. Jackson sighed and rubbed his hands together as he smiled at the two men that stopped in front of him. He could feel Max staring at him in the man’s usual strange fashion—which no one ever understood—and Hayden doing everything in his power not to look at him.

“Are we ready to go?”

Max nodded.

“Where’s Harry and Jersey?”

“They got caught up in some other stuff,” Max replied. “I’m on babysitting duty for this little outing.”

Jackson twisted his lips to the side and wagged his finger at Max. “We are not stopping for coffee. I don’t care how much you beg.”

Max’s lips curled up at the corners, a pleading little gleam in his eyes. “Just one cup?”

“No!”

Max was known far and wide as a caffeine addict. He was almost always seen with a cup of coffee in his hand. The problem was that he didn’t stop with just one cup. He drank coffee by the gallon.

Jackson and the rest of his team members had started to notice recently that Max wasn’t sleeping, and they knew it had to do with his coffee intake. They made it their mission to curb the man’s obsession with the stuff.

“But there’s this great little coffee shop at the end of the block.”

“We’re going in the other direction.”

“Jackson,” Max whined, but Jackson knew it was all in good fun. If the man really wanted coffee, he’d go get some. Jackson suspected that Max would have a cup in his hand by the end of the walk, no matter what he said.

“You need to wear the Kevlar vest the director gave you,” Jackson said as he dismissed Max and turned to look at Hayden.
