The hot Texas sun beat down on the three women as they made their way to get their rental car. Catcalls from a group of workers made Mandy pause.

“Let it go hon.” Jodee gripped her by the elbow and hustled her along. Now was not the time to flex or be noticed. They were here on ‘vacation,’ and they needed to act the part.

Francesca was certainly dressed the part. Her loud garish shirt should have looked awful but on her it worked. Her tan slacks muted the garishness of the shirt just a smidge and her hair flew wildly in the wind. Only someone who truly knew her would realize how frazzled and desperate she was.

“Ladies, come on.”

Fran had sent a text back to Jordan but she had no idea if the other woman had received it. By the time they made it to the rental car counter, they were all sweating.

Mandy took care of the vehicle and loaded the bags. “What time is Sydney due in?”

Fran glanced at her watch. “Not for another two hours at least. Hotel?”

“I don’t know. Maybe we should grab a bite and wait here. Traffic may be hectic and I’d rather hit the ground with all of us present.”

Fran started to disagree but stopped herself. “You’re right, I know you are I just-”

“We know Frannie. Why don’t you pull out your laptop while we eat and see if we can’t find some breadcrumbs?” Jodee tried to sound encouraging but they had minimal information.

“Ooh! Sure. There has to be something I can trace to her.” Fran’s excitement was a welcome change from the more person she’d been on the plane.

“Well come on then.” Mandy looked up from her phone. I found a little place not too far called La Malinche, four stars.”
