Chapter Fifteen

Anthony

I WAS SICK TO MY STOMACH, absolutely pissed and hurt at the same time by my uncle’s betrayal. It was unfathomable. Never, ever would I have guessed there was so much animosity between my father and his brother-in-law. I couldn’t believe Aunt Sofia didn’t know about it. All of them. Uncle Lorenzo, Matt, the various aunts, uncles, cousins, all of them knew. They had laughed, danced, and dined with Rose and me and pretended everything was okay. The pretended to be happy for my father and his success. They pretended to like me. Hell, they had opened their home to me and the whole time they were plotting against me.

I could taste bitter bile at the back of my throat. My stomach cramped and rolled with fury. I couldn’t seem to form a coherent thought. I was broken. I was a broken man with no one to blame but myself. I had ignored my father and did what he had asked me not to. I could never understand why until that moment. Now, I knew. Now, I understood why he’d never returned to Italy and didn’t want me opening the shop there. He knew they hated him, me, all of us for living a life they were envious of.

“Are you okay?” Morgan asked as I haphazardly tossed my clothes into the suitcase, which was opened on the bed.

I nodded, then stopped and slowly shook my head. “No,” I whispered.

“The car’s waiting,” he said in a low voice.

“Okay.”

I tossed the rest of my stuff into the suitcase, then zipped it closed before heading out of the room. I didn’t bother taking a look around. I never wanted to see the place again. I wanted to forget I had ever stepped foot in the damn house.

Morgan opened the door, stepped out, his suitcase in his hand as we walked along the path to the side gate to leave. I didn’t look toward the main house to see if anyone was there, watching our solemn procession. I didn’t want to see them, and I certainly didn’t want to hear another word from them. I didn’t think my heart could take it. I got in the back seat and stared in the opposite direction of the house. I couldn’t bring myself to look at it. The car started moving. I closed my eyes, trying to block it all out. I wasn’t sure where we were going. Morgan had told me he took care of it. I was glad to have him there. I knew I could have managed without him, but I was so glad I didn’t have to.

When the car came to a stop, I looked up to see we were at a hotel. After handing over my platinum American Express, Morgan headed up to our separate rooms.

“Are you going to be okay?” he asked, pausing at his door.

“Yes, I need to call Rose,” I told him.

He slowly nodded. “I’ll come by in an hour. We’ll go downstairs for a drink.”

“Sounds good. Thanks, Morgan, really, I appreciate you being here for me.
