Max hadn’t replied to my text message. I wondered if I had made him angry. Perhaps he just needed space from me. I debated whether or not I should send him another text, but I decided against it, because I didn’t want to annoy him further. The baby was due any day now, and I knew that would probably be his priority.
We were due to see each other again at the clinic today. I wasn’t really sure how I wanted to behave around him, but I resolved to be just as kind as I had been before. At least now, I would get an opportunity to ask him if he wanted to talk. If he didn’t, I would respect him.
On my way there, I decided to stop by a chocolate shop and get a small box for him, as a sign of goodwill. Satisfied with this decision, I entered the now familiar glass doors of the clinic.
When he saw me, his smile was tight. He looked like he was preoccupied. I had started to care deeply for him, and I wished I knew what was going on, so I could help him. But it seemed like he wasn’t going to let me in. Not now, at least.
“I brought you something small.” I handed him the chocolate box.
When he took it from me, his smile was warmer. “Thank you. I really needed this.”
I had a hunch that he was stressed. But about what, I didn’t know. It had to be something more than the awkwardness that hung in the air between us.
We had settled into a routine with Nina by now, and Max took his seat while I watched her apply the gel. Now, I could see that our child was almost fully developed. I could see his fingernails and eyelids and other small details. As always, it was awe-inspiring.
Even though I had a whole binder full of printouts, I wanted copies of today’s image as well. Nina obliged, leaving to get them from the printer. I took advantage of her absence to speak to Max.
“Are you free to talk after this? I don’t know if you received my text message.”
His eyebrows rose. “Oh, I had completely forgotten about it. Something happened to my mother, and that took up all of my attention.”
“What happened?”
“She—she had a heart attack.”
I could tell that the words were painful for him to say. I didn’t blame him at all. “Max, I’m very sorry to hear that. Is there anything I can do for you?”
He looked me right in the eyes, and I could see yearning in their depths. There was something he wanted to say, but he didn’t feel comfortable revealing it right now. But it was a moot point. Nina returned.
“The baby is due any day now.” She smiled. “I’ll be right here when it happens.”
Max turned to her and returned her smile as if our brief conversation had never happened. “I’m glad that I’ll be in your capable hands.”
As we left the clinic, Max fell into step with me.
