Chapter 7

“What do you mean it’s gone?”

“Just what I said. It’s gone.” Aleem started waving his hands anxiously in the air, every flighty bone in his body going wild. “I went upstairs to the room Sahm put me in, and it was missing. Your entire briefcase is gone.”

“What room are you in?” Stavros asked.

“Second door on the left at the top of the stairs.”

Stavros could hear footsteps behind him as he spun and ran out of the room. He wasn’t sure what he could find if just the briefcase was gone, but looking for some sort of clue seemed like the thing to do.

Besides, he needed a few moments to process and think.

The codex was worth a lot of money no matter what the actual words said. Just its age alone would bring in millions in the circles Stavros worked in. If he could decipher the book, it could be worth even more.

That alone could induce someone to steal it.

Stavros just couldn’t figure out who would do it. He trusted his people, and he trusted Nikos. And he knew Nikos trusted the people in his home. So, either someone had gotten into the villa somehow or one of the people they trusted had betrayed them.

Stavros didn’t like the way those thoughts made him feel. His stomach clenched, the bitter taste of betrayal nearly gagging him. The idea that someone close to him could have been so deceitful not only made him sick to his stomach, it enraged him.

Stavros didn’t trust easily. He never had. To have someone that had earned his trust turn out to be rotten made him so angry that he wanted to hit a wall…or whoever had stabbed him in the back.

Stavros hurried up the stairs and stormed down the hallway to the room Aleem had indicated and shoved the door open, stepping inside. His anger rose as he scanned the room looking for any sign of who might have stolen the codex.

Nothing was out of place.

Not a damn thing.

Aleem’s flighty nature did not lend itself to the obsessively organized room. It was probably what made the man such a good assistant. He was as neurotic, insane, and just a bit bouncy. But he was also the only thing that kept Stavros glued together most of the time.

Stavros didn’t even want to contemplate his life without Aleem. He just hoped Aleem and Xander got along. He was starting to think he needed both men in his life. He understood why he needed Aleem. He did not understand why he needed Xander.

The sex had been fantastic, better than Stavros actually remembered sex ever being. He wouldn’t mind experiencing more—a lot more. But great sex was not reason enough to need someone in his life. And this was a growing need. Not a want or a desire, but a gut-wrenching need.

And that made Stavros’s stomach churn almost as much as knowing someone had betrayed him.

“I smell none but those in the house.”

Stavros turned to look at Yannis. Shock rendered him unable to move for a moment as he watched Yannis lift his face into the air, sniffing.
