* * * *

I woke up to the weirdest sound. Birds—a whole symphony of birds.

I wasn't entirely sure how I could sleep through traffic and sirens at home and be woken up by birds chirping.

Or maybe it was the feeling of fingers tracing patterns on my back.

Whatever it was, I woke up smiling.

"Good morning," a sleepy voice said right near my ear.

I hummed my reply, and when I opened my eyes, what I saw was almost surreal.

Trees, the mountains, the valley. The view filtered through morning sunlight was amazing.

"I told you it was beautiful," Kira said beside me. "It's why I wanted you to wake up here."

I sat up in bed and scrubbed my hands over my eyes. I stared at him and smiled. He was sleep-rumpled and gorgeous. I returned my gaze to the view outside the window then back to him. "The view inside is better."

He chuckled and sat up beside me. "Wanna see it close up?"

My eyes trailed down his body to his crotch. I licked my lips and nodded.

He threw his head back and laughed. "I meant outside. The mountains. I thought we could go for a run before breakfast."

I fell back against the pillows with a groan. "I like my idea much better."

But fifteen minutes later, I was following him down a well-worn track through the trees. While I could run for miles on a treadmill, running over open terrain was something else entirely, and it was out here that I got to see just how fit Kira was.

We snaked our way through trail paths, and if it weren't for the occasional passing jogger or walkers, I'd have thought we were lost. The people we passed nodded and smiled, and there were even a few cheerful good mornings.

No one knew me here, no one recognized me. I loved the anonymity, the freedom. I could do what I liked. I could go jogging with my boyfriend. I could be the real me.

I was smiling when I stopped to catch my breath along a break in the path. Kira stopped ahead of me and jogged back to where I was. He pulled my cap off my head. "Out of shape, Detective."

I scoffed at him. "I'm in good shape, just not as fit as the fitness instructor."

He put my LA Lakers cap on his head and grinned at me. "Main part of town is about a quarter mile farther along this track," he said, starting to jog the way he pointed. He was a good forty yards ahead of me, and he called out, "There's a coffee shop!"

Magic words, those.

Of course I beat him there.

We took a moment to catch our breaths, then took our coffees to go and strolled the main street. It was a scenic little town, and Kira told me what he knew and what he remembered from coming here as a kid.

We took our time. We just walked and talked. We didn't hold hands or anything, but it was still the first time I'd been out in public with him.
