Chapter Nine

Thayne and Jarrett said goodbye to Detectives Ryan and Williams and walked back to the Mustang. Once again, they checked around the car before stepping into it. Thayne started it up, cringing just a second as he waited for the blast. It never came. He didn’t like being hunted and he couldn’t imagine how Jarrett must have felt living half his life in war zones where explosions were a daily occurrence. He figured it must feel normal after a while but Thayne was really freaked out about it. He glanced over at Jarrett. There was still so much he didn’t know about his lover. Jarrett was the bravest man he’d ever met, a true hero in Thayne’s eyes. He’d seen him doing things that would have terrified even the best agents he’d worked with. Granted, some of it was reckless, but that’s just who Jarrett was and Thayne loved him regardless.

The hardest thing he had to come to terms with was the same thing Jarrett’s father and brother Elijah had held against him for so long. Jarrett had been an unsavory man for a couple of years after leaving the Marine Corps. Knowing what a patriot Jarrett was, Thayne always had a hard time believing the man he loved had done that. Jarrett was ashamed of it. He knew he was ashamed because he never talked about that time in his life and in fact, every time someone brought it up, Jarrett shut them down. Thayne knew it had to be bad if he wouldn’t talk about it and it bothered him. He kept thinking that he’d done something horrendous and that was almost worse than hearing the truth out of Jarrett’s mouth. They were going to talk about it, and soon.

“So, Adam Michaels, huh?” Jarrett said, interrupting Thayne’s errant thoughts.

“Yeah, can you believe that? He was the partner of that cop we saw talking to the Cho’s, Jack Roebuck.”

“Yeah, and that wasn’t suspicious or anything, right?” Jarrett said.

“It was. We definitely need to go back out to that building and interview Mr. and Mrs. Cho again. He wanted to tell us something but when Crandall stepped in, it was obvious he was afraid.”

“You wanna go back now?”

Thayne didn’t answer because his phone rang. It was lying on the console between their seats. He looked down on the screen to see Sarah’s number come up in caller ID. Jarrett leaned over and answered the phone, putting it on speaker so Thayne could drive and talk at the same time.

“Hey, Sarah,” he said. “I’m in the car with Jarrett. He just put you on speaker.”

“Hi, guys. So, listen, how do you feel about taking a drive out to Palm Springs? I know Snow and Mac just got back but now there’s another reason for you to go back.”

Thayne dragged his eyes from the road for a split second to glance at Jarrett. His partner’s silky black eyebrows were raised.

“What, Sarah? What’s out there?”

“Well, how about Jeffrey Wolkov’s partner, Gary Nelson?”

“Seriously?”

“Yep. He works at that hunting lodge as an instructor.
