Embroidery sewing machines can also stitch out standard and decorative buttonholes to perfection. The embroidery design is either programmed in the machine or purchased as a file and loaded, and the project stabilized and secured with a specially designed machine-embroidery hoop. The placement is determined and programmed, and the buttonholes stitched automatically.

With a hand-sewn buttonhole, you cut the opening before stitching.

Similar to a piped buttonhole (below), a bound or faced buttonhole is sewn around narrow folds of fabric.
