I went home to take a nap but ended up tossing and turning. Donovan had been convincing with the team, so much so that it made me often doubt his words to me. That hurt me and I went home to wallow by myself. I didn’t open myself up to people too much, and I felt like I made a mistake with Donovan.
I ended up ordering some Thai food to eat later. I should eat cleaner with a game the following day, but I just made an effort to keep it healthy. I ate in front of the TV and watched some recap of the games that were on that day. This was a usual day for me, but it felt like a void today.
I could end things with Donovan. We could go back to being teammates and friends and put the bond we had behind us. Fuck if I didn’t feel more for him than I had for anyone else and that idea broke me. I ended up going for a long run on the trails before the sun went down and tried to sort through my thoughts.
The air was cool as it brushed against my skin and the trees were filled with the sound of birds. I loved it out here and hoped that the place I ended up playing pro had something to offer like this. I was too much of an outdoor person to live in a big city with no nature to run to when things got tough. That led me to thinking about my future and how it might take me away from Donovan to begin with. What were the chances of playing for the same team after college? It would be easy to keep casual contact with anyone from the team, but life was going to get busy once I played for the NHL.
I turned to head home as it started to dim and made my way into the building and to my unit. I took a long, hot shower and played back the one I shared with Donovan. I might find that with someone else in time once I was older and settled. I wanted to be open with my sexuality down the line and be accepted for it. That was getting more common in sports now and I’d never be the kind of guy to flaunt it.
I got out and changed into sweats and a t-shirt. I planned to try to watch a movie before bed to relax my mind, but I noticed my phone blinking on the kitchen counter. Mom left a message that my cousin Georgia had been in a serious car accident on the highway and I called her back for the details. Georgia had been driving to see her fiancé when she was rear-ended by a truck, totaling her car and damaging her back and neck. She was taken to the hospital, and it looked as though she’d have a long recovery. While we were talking, Mom
