Chapter 15

Eyes as blue and icy as the glaciers he’d seen in Alaska last summer evaluated Trevor. “I don’t appreciate your fiancée telling the police I attacked her,” Adrianne said.

“Megan didn’t say anything about you to the police.” Trevor wished he could telepathically trigger a call from an overprotective parent or a knock on his office door from an applications processor who urgently needed his input. He’d like a reason to excuse himself and wrack his brain for how to make this less awkward. At least now that Adrianne had come to see him, he could stop feeling guilty that he hadn’t called to explain what had happened yesterday.

“You don’t know what she told the police about me,” Adrianne said. “They wouldn’t have tracked me down in Plymouth if she hadn’t accused me.”

“I’m the one who told Detective Powell we used to date and that you’d indicated to Megan that you didn’t like her or approve of our engagement. I didn’t accuse you of anything, and I’m sorry for the embarrassment and the hassle you’ve been through. The police already wanted to talk to you in your role as property manager, and for me to hide the history between us or avoid mentioning your attitude toward Megan would have been deceitful and obstructive.”

“They already knew the history between us. This is the second time they’ve talked to me. They came a couple weeks ago to ask who might have keys to Megan’s apartment and if I knew of anyone who might have a problem with her or your sister. They didn’t tell me anything specific, just that there had been harassment.”

“You told Detective Powell we’d dated?”

“Did you expect me to act like it was a guilty secret? He asked how well I knew Megan, and I said not very well. He said he’d heard my family was friends with the Drake family and asked how well I knew Rachel. I said I knew her, but Larissa knew Rachel and Megan a lot better than I did. And I told him I’d dated you a while back. I didn’t want him to learn that from Larissa or someone else and think I’d hidden it.”

“That makes sense,” Trevor said, irritated that pleasantly poker-faced Powell hadn’t indicated he already knew about Adrianne and Trevor when Trevor had brought her up.

“I don’t appreciate your telling him I don’t like Megan,” Adrianne said. “If Megan thinks that, she’s hypersensitive. I’ve been completely polite.”

Oh brother. Megan was not hypersensitive, and Trevor had seen Adrianne be standoffish or rude to people who bothered her. The asymmetrical silver bracelet on her wrist reminded him of listening to her complain about a clerk who’d neglected to give her the sale price on a necklace, then watching her criticize a customer service worker who couldn’t figure out how to refund the percentage the clerk should have deducted. Trevor empathized with her annoyance—neither worker had been competent—but her curt impatience had elevated his uncertainty and misgivings into a solid decision: he didn’t want to continue a relationship with her.
