Chapter Twelve

“This day is turning out to be a bit of a roller coaster,” Zane said as they backed down the long driveway onto the main street. “I feel like I’m fifteen all over again.”

Beckett shifted gears and pressed on the gas.

“Can’t get out of there fast enough, huh?”

Beckett didn’t say anything.

Zane picked up his sketchbook, and the pamphlet he’d taken from the gas station dropped out of it. The sight of it sparked an idea, and he typed an address into Maps on his phone.

Zane gestured with his phone. “Turn right at the next fork.”

“My place is left and around the corner.”

“Your smile is 5.3 miles away, starting with this right turn.”

Beckett leaned against the headrest and let out a soft chuckle. He turned right, and just over five miles later they pulled up at Greenville’s antique bookstore, Silver Pines.

Zane gaped at the beautiful repurposed chapel.

“This is my favorite bookstore,” Beckett said. “How did you know?”

Zane hadn’t known it was Beckett’s favorite, but since it was close to his childhood home, he figured he knew of the store. He held up the pamphlet. “Fancy script and the word classic. Let’s go inside.”

Beckett landed a palm on his upper thigh and squeezed. Zane stopped, breath stalling. Beckett looked away from the chapel to him. “You have the biggest heart I know.”

“Take as much of it as you like.”

“You don’t know what you’re offering.”

“What, gonna take it all?” Zane joked.

Beckett didn’t answer. He restarted the car.

“Hey, wait, aren’t we going inside?”

Beckett removed his hand from Zane’s thigh and drove three minutes through a network of streets, from boulevards to narrow cobblestone alleys. He parked again. “Now, let’s go inside.”

When Zane spotted a brightly colored comic book store, he ripped at his seatbelt and bounded toward the store.

“I could kiss you, Becky,” he called out, gleefully yanking the door open.

Beckett’s voice trailed behind him as the world of comics swallowed him whole. “Go for it.”
