* * * *
Pete stood on the sidewalk and stared up at the moon. He gripped the cell phone in his hand as a couple walked by him with their dog in tow. They were completely oblivious to the thoughts shouting inside his mind. No one could hear the anguish that had been building up for hours. Several times he had attempted to take that first step, but each time he couldn’t find the will to begin.
So many times today he had considered calling Declan. Each time the thought entered his mind, he quickly dismissed it. He had no idea what he’d even say to him. They just met last night. If it wasn’t for the fact that they were supposed to work together, their interlude would probably be a onetime thing. Like a one-night stand, but in the morning hours.
Did they even have a name for that, he wondered. Maybe it was just about sex and he didn’t know it yet. In Declan’s eyes it could have just been about two dudes getting it on to alleviate some tension. The only problem was, he would never know unless he asked. How did one even ask that question, though? Wouldn’t the question itself make him incredibly vulnerable to Declan? Not that he wasn’t already.
This morning he’d thought their interlude was hot and heavy just like he liked it. He wanted nothing more than to do it again and try new things, but he wasn’t in the market for anything serious.
All day long his feelings had been betraying his plan. Ever since he’d gotten the call from his mother and stormed out of the restaurant, he had felt the uncontrollable urge to reach out for Declan. It did a number on his mind in more ways than one.
He’d tried to keep the focus on his mother all day. He’d calmed her, comforted her, and held her while she cried with worry over his father. He did just what a good son should do for his mother and stayed strong. All the worry he felt he kept inside, pushing it down and refusing to let it rear its ugly head. His mother needed his strength, not his fear.
After over an hour of waiting in the emergency room and hearing nothing, both he and his mother were near their breaking point. Minutes before Pete was about to raise hell and demand answers, the doctor had finally come out to tell them of his father’s condition.
His father had a severe heart attack. An angioplasty had discovered blocked arteries, which needed to be repaired immediately. The doctor further explained that these blockages didn’t happen overnight and his dad probably had been having chest pains for some time now. Unbelievably, his mother then said he’d been taking an awful lot of aspirin lately, but he’d told her it was because his arthritis was acting up.
In mere minutes, Pete had gone from thinking his father was in top condition for a man his age, to finding out he wasn’t as strong as he thought he was.
