CHESTNUT-BELLIED ROCK THRUSH

Monticola rufiventris 24 cm F: Muscicapidae

Description: Large, chestnut and dark blue thrush. Male has deep blue upperparts, darker on wings and throat and deep chestnut underparts. Non-breeding male has buff fringes to upperparts. Female greyish brown with buff cheek patches on dark face and heavily dark-barred underparts. Care needed to distinguish female from Zoothera thrushes. Immature scaly buff and brown.

Voice: Harsh schrrk and tikk calls. Song a rather quiet, undulating and fluty melody.

Habits: Inhabits open forest, including pines, on rocky slopes. Usually perches prominently on tree-tops, slowly wagging tail. Feeds singly or in pairs on insects on ground. Nests close to ground.
