‘Wait a minute,’ says Reese. ‘The city is that way.’

She points down the mountain in a northeasterly direction.

‘Yup,’ I reply. ‘We’re not going back to the city right now.’

‘We’re not?’

‘Nope.’

Reese fidgets a little impatiently, then asks: ‘Where are we going then?’

There’s something so childlike about her. So sweet and vulnerable.

It’s taking everything I’ve got not to accidentally call her Baby Girl. I swear, I’ve had DDlg relationships that have felt less pronounced than this one. When I’m around Reese, I feel like more of a Daddy Dom than I ever have in my life. And I swear she’s more of a Little than some of the Littles I’ve known. Like, with her it’s not an act — it just comes naturally.

‘Well,’ I say, ‘I thought we’d start checking off some of the stuff on your list.’

She stares at me, confused. ‘What list?

‘Wait until we get over the brow of this hill, then you’ll see.’

She fidgets a little more, until eventually, we crest the hill, and the most stunning view of the ocean appears, as if by magic.

‘Oh my goodness,’ she gasps. ‘Is that… real?’

‘Yes,’ I laugh. ‘It’s real.’

She sniffs, and when I take a quick sideways look at her, I see that there are tears in her eyes. ‘I haven’t seen the ocean since I was a little girl.’

I smile. ‘It was on your list, right? So I thought we’d better go take a look.’

She looks at me. ‘Oh, Phoenix, that’s so kind. Thank you, thank you, thank you!’

‘That’s okay,’ I say, laughing. ‘We’d better not make ourselves too public. Not until I’ve dealt with a few things. But I happen to know an amazing little ice-cream place nearby with a view to die for.’

‘Hopefully not,’ says Reese.

‘Not what?’

‘Not actually die.’ She giggles. It’s good to hear her making jokes. The difference in her between now and when I first met her is palpable. If I can keep helping her like this, making her comfortable enough to be her true self, it’ll be the best thing I ever did.

I drive us to an ice-cream shack halfway down the mountain, and as always, the place is practically empty. It really is one of the best kept secrets around here. I don’t get ice-cream often, but back when I used to get real police work to do, I sometimes had to look into joyriders on the mountains, forest fires, even the odd dead body out on the trails. Now and then, I’d stop off here on the way home. Brush off the horrors of the day with a homemade waffle cone.

‘This place is so cute!’ squeals Reese. ‘I haven’t had an ice-cream in so long. I can barely remember what it tastes like!’

We take a table outside — the one with the best view of the ocean — and I give Reese plenty of time to look over the menu. Looking over the menu is half the fun, after all.

While she looks at the menu, I can’t resist looking at her. She really is the most beautiful woman I ever saw.
