Executive Leadership
The executive director has an important role and responsibility in philanthropic stewardship, working closely with the director of philanthropy and representing the strong financial management of the company and the foundation. Donors and patrons are like shareholders or stakeholders and need to know their investments are being well managed and having a valuable impact on the company through well-reviewed performances, new works, international touring and the achievements of the dancers. The executive director leads the executive management team and therefore oversees robust discussion around the general health of the company, the strategic direction, plans for the future and a strong partnership between management and artistic direction. An engaged donor will observe the executive directorâs leadership across all aspects of the companyâs operations. There are many opportunities, both informal and formal, when the executive director will meet patrons, potential donors and current donors, and will talk about the company, giving insights into leadership strength, business acumen and the integrity of the company.
The leadership style of the executive director impacts on the director of philanthropy. Their relationship is pivotal to successful donor relationships and the strategic importance of philanthropy in the company. If the executive director is experienced in the philanthropy area then the lead can come from that person in managing key relationships. In Australia the executive director generally does not have philanthropic activity as a part of their remit, so the director of philanthropy acts as a coach or mentor to the executive director to ensure the right people are communicating to donors at the right time, and that philanthropy is a key component of the companyâs forward strategy. Similarly, the executive director, who serves the board of the company, should engage board members who have experience or are willing to work with donors when possible, and support any training initiatives for board members.
In essence, the executive director and the director of philanthropy must work in tandem sharing visionary leadership for operationalising the values, vision and mission of the company to donors, according to the particular responsibilities of their roles.
