Chapter Four

Cruz settled on the step beside Storm. He was amazed that Storm would sit here like this but very pleased. This was where he was happy and relaxed, surrounded by the people of the town living their lives.

“My parents married late in life. My mom was forty-five when I was born. They always made it plain they loved me, but they didn’t really know what to do with a growing boy. As a young child, I went to a lot of summer camps. By the time I was twelve or thirteen, I used to entertain myself by walking around the city, going to the museum, the art gallery, or the library. You have to remember we didn’t have the Internet at home. It was one of the first things I organized when I moved into my own apartment. But of course I’d already developed the habit of walking the city by then.”

He looked at Storm, who was sitting side-on watching him. By now Storm must have realized how very different Cruz’s life had been from his own, growing up in a large, noisy family of boys.

“I decided to study law because I wanted to help people. I specialize in family law because it seems to me that, most often, it is women and kids who get the raw deal in life. Sometimes what I learn can be hard and cruel, but it pleases me that now and then I can make a difference. I really hope I can help Chris. That she will rise above the way Tom has treated her and rear her baby so they both have happy and fulfilling lives.”

“We’re all going to make damn sure she makes her own choices without any interference from that asshole. But tell me more about these people, and yourself. Your own passions.”

“From the time I was thirteen until I was in my early twenties, I knew every inch of this city intimately. I’m sure you remember that teenage boys are both inquisitive and fearless. I wandered through all the back streets and alleys, climbed fences, explored empty buildings, and spent a lot of time sitting in parks and gardens watching the world go by. Those first few summers were when I developed as a person. I finally began to really understand people.”

“What do you mean understand people?”

“You asked about the singer. When she was eighteen she was accepted into the Opera here. She was in line for her first solo part when she fell in love with one of the male leads and got pregnant. She was forced to leave the company because back then pregnant singers didn’t sing in public. All the years she reared her family she hoped to sing. Finally the youngest kid was old enough to leave and she started taking singing lessons again. Then her oldest kid came back home pregnant and drug addicted. Now she’s living in a trailer on the outskirts of town rearing her grandkids.”

“Meanwhile the chances of her being an opera star are fading as she gets older.
