Truth claims: examination

Comparing truth claims when attempting to build relationships is not helpful. In interfaith dialogue, however, where theological change is the goal, competing truth claims lie at the very heart of the problem. The process of comparing truths is of course, dangerous and delicate, as truth claims lie at the very core of religious belief and are often held with passion. Yet if the religions are to foster peace and harmony between themselves, they must find a way to live with each other.

It took the Holocaust to stir the beginnings of real Jewish–Christian dialogue. Many Christians asked themselves how the Holocaust could have happened in a culture formed and shaped by Christian ideas. The world cannot allow religions to wait for such a calamity to happen again before they engage in a genuine process of self-examination and change. Two different directions have been proposed for developing interfaith harmony – a global ethic and the celebration of diversity. Although these might superficially seem to be contradictory possibilities, closer study will show that they in fact overlap.
