Chapter Twenty Six

CHARLIE

It’s official. Trace turns me into a hot mess. If someone had told me a month ago that I would be this hot for a guy other than Luke, I would never have believed them. I would have laughed in their face and probably would have gotten all defensive. But with each day that I spend with Trace, I start to become more like the old Charlie. The one I was before my world was shattered to pieces nearly three years ago.

It’s crazy to think about how important Trace has become to me in such a short amount of time, but after what we have both been through, I guess we both realise how short life actually can be. One minute you can be the happiest you have ever been, and then the next minute you can be plummeting to the depths of despair, being swallowed up by grief and hurt.

“Melia, please,” I hear Oliver say, his little voice carrying from the lounge into the kitchen. I prick my ears and listen to see what he wants Amelia to do.

“Oh, come on, buddy, we just played that game three times,” Amelia replies, and I can hear the exasperation in her voice. I put down the knife that I was chopping the chicken up with, wash my hands, and go to try and rescue her. Once Oliver has his heart set on something, it’s pretty difficult to persuade him otherwise.

“You two okay in here?” I ask as I enter the lounge and see them both sat on the floor, Oliver’s train set between the two of them.

“We’re playing trains, Mummy,” Oliver tells me.

“I can see that, sweetie.” I smile and then look to Amelia who is giving me a pleading look.

“Melia is the controller and I’m the steam engine,” he continues as he starts to move one of the trains around the track.

“That’s great, baby, but I need to borrow Amelia for a little bit to help me in the kitchen,” I say, bending down to his level and giving him a kiss on his forehead.

“Oh, Mummy, that’s not fair,” he replies, pouting. “Melia was going to direct the trains.”

“Well, I really need Amelia’s help, and I promise that I will play trains with you before bedtime.”

Oliver takes a moment to think about what I have said before he shrugs his little shoulders and says, “Okay, Mummy.” I look to Amelia, and she gives me a smile, mouthing the word “thank you” to me.

We leave Oliver playing and go into the kitchen. I resume chopping up the remainder of the chicken for our dinner as Amelia stands just along from me and leans against the worktop.

“Thanks, Charlie,” she says, letting out a little sigh of relief. “I don’t think I could have conducted the trains for much longer. I mean, I think Ollie is brilliant, but there is only so long that I can act like an enthusiastic controller before I am ready to throw the trains in the bin.
