CREATING MOOD

In photography, “mood” is a pretty easy concept to grasp. Anytime the light plays a major role in how an image “feels” to a viewer, it’s moody. Mood is not something that just appears in front of you. You have to create it by visualizing how something could look if you changed the shutter speed, aperture, or ISO setting, making an image brighter or darker than it appears to the eye. The images on pages 58 and 59 show the effect of establishing mood.

The secret to creating great moody images is recognizing opportunities when they present themselves. The scene pictured here did not actually look like this. The bird in this image was simply sunning itself. To create the black background, the artist simply positioned himself so that the bright bird was in front of a large shadow. The shadow was not black. The artist took away light by selecting a faster shutter speed, lower ISO, or smaller aperture, checking his results, and adjusting his settings until he created the mood he had imagined.
