BENSALEM RESCUE SQUAD

In June 1996, as campaign coordinator for the Bensalem Rescue Squad, Bensalem, Pennsylvania, I prepared a case presentation to raise $400,000 to expand its existing facility to accommodate more ambulances and supply rooms and crews for the Rescue Squad. At the June 26th meeting of the Campaign Advisory Council, Arnold D. Ody, chairman, and the Bensalem mayor, Joseph Di Giordano, outlined the need for a larger facility in the rapidly growing community and the mounting travel-related emergencies on the surrounding regional highways. The number of emergencies had grown to an unprecedented 5,000 each year, leading to a doubling of the Rescue Squad’s budget requirements. Public funds were inadequate to sustain the squad, leading to the fundraising campaign.

The case presentation looked to the raising of ten challenge gifts in the corporate sector and from individuals to cover 40 percent of the campaign goal. A business and merchants committee was planned to promote special gatherings and broaden the campaign’s outreach throughout the community.

During my tenure, I visited several businessmen, whose responses were generally quite negative. Unlike an appeal to foundations or representatives of large corporations, my requests for donations and pledges were met with certain hostility toward a paid fundraiser who did not live in the community. Generally, there was little awareness of the work of the rescue squad and a sense that the local hospital would continue to be able to handle all emergencies confronting residents. The Campaign Advisory Council became aware of these responses and was increasingly opposed to supporting a professional consultant. A planned campaign victory event did not take place, and an ongoing appeal concentrated on selected corporations and wealthy residents.
