Midhope Castle, the 15th-century tower house transformed into Lallybroch Manor, home to Jamie’s family

CULROSS

It is no wonder the Outlander team chose picture-perfect Culross to be Cranesmuir, the village near Castle Leoch

The rustic village of Culross (pronounced ‘Cooross’), with its cobbles and cottages, overlooking the Firth of Forth, is a place time forgot. It is a unique example of what a town in Scotland would have looked like during the 17th and 18th centuries.

THE PALACE

Culross Palace, a magnificent ochre-coloured former merchant’s mansion with an authentic period feel (open from Easter), has featured in multiple Outlander episodes. The little ‘Withdrawing Room’ became Geillis Duncan’s parlour where Jamie met Claire after her visit. In Season Two, the courtyard and stairway were used as a camp where Claire extracts a tooth for a local villager; the kitchen and pantry became a tavern and the High Hall hosted the Jacobite assembly. Finally, the Kings Room became a bedroom for a scene between Jamie and Claire.
