Chapter Twenty

James looked up as Morgan and Tristan made their way into the pub and wound their way around the other patrons until they reached the table the rest of the group was seated at.

“Was about to send out a search party for you two,” Annie snarked, halfway through her second pint.

Tristan smiled, her eyes darting briefly to James then sliding away, again. “Just catching up.”

Translation: they’d been talking about him. His gaze slid to Morgan, who studied him wordlessly, for a moment, before picking up the pint James had ordered for him and raised it in the air before taking a sip and turning to Rory.

“So,” Morgan began, “is this where I lecture you about taking good care of my sister so I don’t have to kill you?”

“Morgan,” Tris groaned. “Leave it be.”

“I’m just kidding. Tristan is more than capable of taking care of herself—always has been. And I’ve never known her to make a bad choice about the people she allows into her life.” He exchanged a look with Tristan when he said the last, and James figured that comment had far more meaning that it seemed from the outside. Morgan glanced at Rory, again. “But I would love to hear more about you. I know you two met at work, but how did you two start going out? I don’t think I’ve ever heard that story.”

Annie snorted, and Clover’s eyes widened. Both women quickly buried their faces in the menus in front of them. James made a mental note to grill Tristan about that, later.

Morgan smiled at something Rory said and sat back in his chair. James was once again struck by how fucking gorgeous the man was. And god help him, James couldn’t wait to get him home, tonight. His cock stirred at the thought of wrapping the supple leather around Morgan’s wrists and ankles. He could almost feel the bow in his hand, could picture it thudding across Morgan’s arse, could imagine the bright red welts rising against his skin. Shifting in his seat, he willed away his erection. When he finally managed to look away from Morgan and rejoin the rest of the conversation, he found Tristan’s eyes on him—watching him speculatively. Somehow, he didn’t think he was going to get through this night without being quizzed by his best girl.

And he was right. After they’d eaten, Morgan took them over to the wall for a few rounds of darts. Tristan stayed behind—to catch up with Jamie, she’d told them, but he knew the real reason.

“I imagine you’re going to be just as evasive as Morgan is, but it doesn’t mean I’m not going to try.” Taking a sip from her glass, she stared at him over the rim and waited. Finally, she sighed, set down her wine and said, “What gives, Jamie? When I talked to you, a week ago, or whenever it was...I don’t even know, anymore, you guys hadn’t spoken in forever. Now, you look like you’re having to restrain yourself from jumping him.
