Sixteen

I called ahead the next morning to see if Malcom Glazebrook would be in his office in Salt Lake. I was told that he had a matter at the Matheson Courthouse in the afternoon but that if I could be there by eleven, he could see me. His receptionist wanted to know what I wanted, but I simply said, “I’ll tell him when I see him.”

That would work perfectly for both Detective Shelburn and me. Bardett Kingston had survived the surgery, but he was still in critical condition. We were told that we shouldn’t even attempt to speak with him until after twelve. So with that in mind we headed for Salt Lake in Sheldon’s unmarked gray Ford Explorer.

We both had overnight bags with us in case we needed to go to Las Vegas. So far, we didn’t know. The officers down there had located the home of Martin Jameson’s parents, but they had gotten no response when they knocked on the door in plain clothes. They had been told the importance of not giving the people inside any idea that the cops were interested in the place. Sheldon had also talked them into setting up surveillance on the home to see if anyone entered or exited the residence. They also agreed to see if Martin showed up at his job in one of the casinos. Our plan was to wait, but if we heard of any activity at the house or if we learned that Martin was at work, we’d catch a flight to Las Vegas. The officer Sheldon talked to had agreed to pick us up at the airport and give us whatever assistance we needed.

I was tense over the whole situation. I hadn’t received any further texts. The last one was a desperate plea. My prayers could be said to be the same—desperate pleas to the Lord for Wyanne’s safety.

We reached Malcom Glazebrook’s office about ten thirty. His Escalade was in the parking lot, so we were sure he was there. Sheldon agreed to stay outside while I went in. “I’ll get some pictures of his Escalade,” he said. “I want his license number and some shots of his tires. If we happen to get a match to the tracks in Little Egypt . . . well, then we’ll arrest the good attorney.”

“Just don’t let anyone catch you,” I said. “Glazebrook might get nasty if he thinks we are doing anything nefarious.”

“I can be discreet,” he said with a grin. “Good luck in there.”

When I was ushered to Malcom’s private office, I had to suppress a whistle. Everything about his firm’s decor shouted of money. If I were so crazy as to accept his offer of a job, I would obviously have a much nicer office than Duchesne County provided for me. But I still wasn’t tempted.

Malcom welcomed me with a hearty chuckle and a firm handshake. “Decide to take the job, did you? Why don’t I show you around the place, introduce you to the staff?”

“Actually,” I said, “that’s not why I’m here.
